Bringing Family from Zimbabwe to the UK: Spouse, Partner and Dependent Visas Explained

For Zimbabweans settled in the UK, reuniting with a spouse or bringing dependent children over is one of the most significant and complex immigration processes they will face. The rules are detailed, the costs are substantial, and refusals are common when applications are poorly prepared. Understanding exactly what is required before submitting is essential.
## Who Can Sponsor a Family Member?
To bring a Zimbabwean spouse or partner to the UK, the person in the UK (the sponsor) must be a British citizen, or hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), refugee status, or humanitarian protection. Both partners must be at least 18 years old. The couple must demonstrate a genuine and subsisting relationship, that they have met in person (video calls via WhatsApp or Zoom do not count), and that they intend to live together permanently in the UK.
## Financial Requirements
The financial threshold is the single most common stumbling block for Zimbabwean applicants. Since 11 April 2024, new applicants must show a minimum annual income of **£29,000 before tax**, or cash savings of at least **£88,500**. Income and savings can be combined in certain circumstances, but cash savings only count above £16,000 — the calculation then requires savings of £88,500 for a standalone savings route.
Importantly, there are transitional arrangements for those already on the spouse visa route. If you were granted a spouse or fiancé visa **before 11 April 2024** and are extending your stay with the same partner, the previous lower threshold of **£18,600** continues to apply, plus an additional £3,800 for a first dependent child and £2,400 for each subsequent child (capped at £29,000 in total).
As of April 2024, new applicants are no longer required to add additional income thresholds for dependent children — the £29,000 figure covers all dependants.
There are exemptions to the income requirement. If the UK-based sponsor receives certain disability-related benefits — including Personal Independence Payment, Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, or Severe Disablement Allowance — the standard income threshold does not apply. Instead, the family must show they can be adequately housed and maintained without additional recourse to public funds. Lower thresholds also apply for sponsors serving in HM Armed Forces.
## English Language Requirement
Zimbabwean applicants generally have a strong advantage here, as Zimbabwe is an English-speaking country. However, the Home Office still requires formal proof. For an initial spouse visa, applicants must demonstrate English language ability at **CEFR Level A1**. This is typically done through the IELTS Life Skills A1 test or another approved exam taken at a UKVI-recognised centre. For a visa extension, the requirement rises to A2, and for ILR it rises further to B1.
Exemptions exist for applicants aged 65 or over, those with certain long-term physical or mental conditions, and those holding a degree taught and assessed in English. Certificates must be valid at the time of application — an expired test result can delay or sink an otherwise strong application.
## Accommodation
The UK sponsor must show there is adequate accommodation in the UK for the couple (and any children) without overcrowding. This can be rented property, an owner-occupied home, or accommodation belonging to a relative — provided written consent from that relative is included in the application.
## Visa Duration and the Route to Settlement
A successful spouse visa applicant applying from outside the UK (i.e., from Zimbabwe) is granted **2 years and 9 months** (33 months) of leave. Those switching from inside the UK receive **2 years and 6 months** (30 months).
Spouse visa holders can work in the UK without restriction, change jobs without notifying the Home Office, study, and travel in and out of the country freely.
Before the initial visa expires, holders can apply for a **30-month extension**. After a total of five continuous years on the spouse visa route, the applicant can apply for **Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)**, provided the income requirement is still met at that stage. Once ILR is granted, a spouse of a British citizen can apply immediately for **British citizenship**. If the sponsor is not a British citizen, there is a 12-month wait after ILR before naturalisation.
## Dependent Children
Children under 18 who are not leading independent lives can be included in or added to the application. Each child requires a separate application and pays their own visa fee. The visa granted to a child will normally match the duration of the parent's leave. The sponsor must demonstrate sole or shared parental responsibility and adequate accommodation.
## Tuberculosis (TB) Testing
Zimbabwe is on the list of countries from which applicants must provide a TB test certificate from an approved clinic before applying for a UK visa valid for more than six months. This must be done in Zimbabwe before submitting the application.
## Immigration Health Surcharge
All spouse visa applicants must pay the **Immigration Health Surcharge** as part of their application. As of 2025, this is £1,035 per year for most adults, paid upfront for the full duration of the visa when applying. For a 33-month visa, that amounts to approximately £2,587 per adult, in addition to the visa application fee itself.
## Practical Advice
Given the complexity and the financial stakes involved, many Zimbabweans in the UK choose to use an immigration solicitor or barrister registered with the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC). A poorly prepared application — missing bank statements, inconsistent evidence of the relationship, or an expired English language certificate — can result in refusal, wasted fees, and months of additional separation. All applications are submitted online via gov.uk, and biometrics are enrolled at a visa application centre in Zimbabwe.
