British Citizenship by Naturalisation

After obtaining ILR, Zimbabweans can apply for British citizenship through naturalisation. This grants the right to hold a British passport, vote in all UK elections, and pass citizenship to children. Requirements for naturalisation: - Be aged 18 or over - Hold ILR for at least 12 months (or apply immediately if married to a British citizen) - Meet the B1 English language requirement (expected to rise to B2 from spring 2026) - Pass the Life in the UK Test (if not already passed for ILR) - Meet the Good Character requirement (no serious criminal convictions, no immigration breaches) - Have been physically present in the UK for required periods - Not have been outside the UK for more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying (if married to British citizen) or more than 450 days in the 5 years before applying (standard route) - Application fee: £1,580 (non-refundable) The process takes approximately 6 months. If approved, you attend a citizenship ceremony at your local council where you take an oath of allegiance and receive your certificate. You can then apply for a British passport. Special routes: Zimbabweans born in the UK before 1983, or with a parent born in the UK before 1983, may have an automatic claim to British nationality by birth rather than naturalisation. Those with a UK-born grandparent may qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa route instead.
