Bringing a spouse, children, or other dependants from Zimbabwe to the UK is one of the most emotionally charged journeys a Zimbabwean in the diaspora will face. The process involves navigating multiple visa routes, strict financial requirements, and careful document preparation. Understanding which route applies to your situation is the critical first step.
## The Spouse or Partner Visa (Appendix FM)
If you are a British citizen or have Indefinite Leave to Remain, your Zimbabwean spouse or partner can apply to join you on a spouse or partner visa. To qualify, the relationship must be genuine — either a legal marriage or an unmarried partnership with at least two years of cohabitation.
The visa initially lasts 2.5 years, after which your spouse applies to extend for a further 2.5 years. After five continuous years of lawful residence, they can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
**Financial requirement:** The sponsoring partner in the UK must earn at least £29,000 gross per year. This threshold was raised from £18,600 in April 2024. Note that income the applicant earns in Zimbabwe does not generally count toward this threshold — it is the UK-based sponsor's earnings that matter. Cash savings can be used to supplement income in some cases.
**English language requirement:** The Zimbabwean applicant must demonstrate English at A1 level, typically through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT).
**Application fee:** The visa application fee is £1,938, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is currently £1,035 per year of the visa. For a 2.5-year visa, the surcharge comes to approximately £2,587. Total upfront costs therefore run to over £4,500 before any legal fees.
**Process:** Applications are made online through the UKVI portal. The applicant in Zimbabwe must then attend a biometric appointment at a visa application centre in Zimbabwe, where fingerprints and a photograph are taken and all supporting documents submitted. Applicants cannot switch from a visitor visa to a spouse visa from inside the UK — if someone has entered on a visit visa, they must return to Zimbabwe and apply from there.
**Processing time:** Standard processing takes approximately 12 weeks from outside the UK. Priority processing, where available, can reduce this to around 30 working days.
## Dependent Child Visas
Children under 18 can apply to join a parent in the UK. The application is made online, with a biometric appointment required in Zimbabwe. It is generally advisable to apply as a family unit rather than separately, particularly where sole responsibility or dependency must be demonstrated.
The same income threshold that applies to spouse visas applies when sponsoring a dependent child. For a first child, an additional £3,800 per year above the base threshold was historically required; this structure may change as the rules continue to evolve.
Common reasons for refusal include failure to demonstrate sole responsibility (if one parent remains in Zimbabwe), inconsistencies in documentation, or insufficient evidence of the parent-child relationship. Multiple refusals are not uncommon — some families in the Zimbabwean diaspora have faced four or more rejections before succeeding, often with specialist legal assistance.
## Refugee Family Reunion
For Zimbabweans in the UK who hold refugee status or humanitarian protection, a separate route existed specifically for family reunion — allowing spouses and children under 18 to join them without the sponsor needing to meet an income threshold or the applicant needing to demonstrate English.
However, in September 2025, the UK government temporarily suspended the dedicated refugee family reunion route, announcing that a revised, stricter system would be introduced in spring 2026. In the interim, refugees must apply under the standard family migration rules — meaning the £29,000 income requirement and the A1 English language test now apply to this group as well.
The relationship must have predated the sponsor's displacement; family relationships formed in transit or after arrival in the UK are not eligible under this route.
For those who do hold protection status and had previously applied under refugee family reunion rules, it is worth noting that historically 87% of initial applications were approved, and around 66% of rejected applications succeeded on appeal — figures that underline the value of pursuing refusals through the appeals process rather than abandoning an application.
## Key Practical Points
- **Start document gathering early.** Birth certificates, marriage certificates, proof of relationship, and financial evidence must all be certified and in order before applying. Delays in obtaining Zimbabwean civil documents are common.
- **Consistency matters.** Discrepancies between documents — such as different spellings of names, or dates that do not align — are among the leading causes of refusal.
- **Legal advice pays for itself.** Given the complexity and the high cost of refusals, instructing a regulated UK immigration solicitor significantly improves outcomes, particularly for cases involving children or multiple prior refusals.
- **Income from outside the UK.** If the UK-based sponsor has recently returned from Zimbabwe or has mixed income sources, specialist advice is essential before submitting.
- **Rules are changing rapidly.** The UK immigration landscape shifted significantly between 2024 and 2026. Always verify current requirements on GOV.UK or with a regulated adviser before paying any fees, as the thresholds and route availability described here reflect the position as of mid-2025 to early 2026.
