How do I open a UK bank account as a Zimbabwean?

General information only, not legal advice. Rules and requirements change; check the relevant official source before acting.
Opening a UK bank account requires proof of identity and proof of address. Major banks (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest) typically require a passport or BRP plus a utility bill, council tax letter, or bank statement showing your UK address. If you are newly arrived and do not have proof of address yet, some banks are more flexible — Monzo, Starling, and other digital banks often accept registration with just a passport and allow you to use your new address immediately. Some banks accept a letter from your employer or landlord as proof of address. HSBC offers a basic bank account with fewer documentation requirements. Opening a bank account is essential for receiving salary, setting up direct debits for bills, and building a UK credit history. Apply in branch or online depending on the bank. Having your BRP and a UK address ready makes the process much smoother.
