Funeral and repatriation
How does repatriating a body to Zimbabwe compare in cost to a UK burial, and what insurance options exist?
Last updated 3 November 2026
Bringing a loved one home to Zimbabwe is significantly more expensive than a local UK burial, mainly due to international embalming, documentation, coffin preparation and air freight charges. Several UK specialist repatriation firms quote all-inclusive packages for flights into Harare International Airport: Rowland Brothers International starts from £2,300, Mears Repatriation Service offers an all-inclusive price of £2,975 (their itemised fee structure lists a repatriation fee of £2,410, plus extras such as Air Way Bill production at £95, Telephone/Fax at £15, and NES Customs at £50), Homeland International quotes an estimated total of £4,110 (based on an estimated weight of 150kg, with final costs confirmed once airline pricing is received), and Global Funeral Repatriation charges £4,200, including a light oak veneer coffin, with mortuary care beyond their 90-day allowance billed at £5 per day. According to Nyaradzo Group UK & Europe, families who are not already Nyaradzo members typically pay between £4,000 and £7,000 to repatriate a body from the UK to Zimbabwe. By contrast, a standard UK cremation or burial without international transport, embalming for air freight, or cross-border paperwork avoids these added costs entirely.
Repatriation typically takes 7 to 10 days once the deceased is in the funeral home's care, though this can extend if a coroner is involved. Required documents generally include the deceased's passport, two death certificates, and a signed authorisation form, while the funeral provider arranges the Zimbabwe Health Permit, Free From Infection Certificate and customs clearance.
Given these costs, diaspora families are increasingly taking out dedicated funeral insurance before need arises. Diaspora Insurance offers a Diaspora Funeral Cash Plan for African immigrants in Europe and the UK, alongside products covering reverse repatriation (Zimbabwe to UK) and burial abroad. EasyPizii's Diaspora Insurance plan offers up to £10,000 of cover, payout within 24 hours, and body repatriation assistance from the UK, EU and USA to Zimbabwe. Comparing quotes from multiple providers and confirming current premiums directly with insurers is advisable, as cover levels and terms vary.
