The UK credit score system affects your ability to rent a home, get a phone contract, obtain credit cards, and access loans. When you first arrive from Zimbabwe, you will have no UK credit history, which can be a challenge. Your credit score is calculated by agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) based on your financial behaviour in the UK. To build your credit score: register on the electoral roll at your UK address (if eligible — you need to be a Commonwealth citizen to register), get a basic bank account and use it regularly, consider a credit builder credit card (use it for small purchases and pay the full balance every month), pay all bills on time (mobile phone, utilities), and avoid applying for multiple credit products in a short period. You can check your credit score for free through services like ClearScore, Credit Karma, or Experian. Building good credit takes time — typically 6 to 12 months of responsible financial behaviour will establish a basic score. A good credit score opens doors and can save you money through better interest rates and easier access to housing.
