How does UK council tax work?

General information only, not legal advice. Rules and requirements change; check the relevant official source before acting.
Council tax is a local government tax based on the property you live in. Every household in England, Scotland, and Wales must pay council tax unless exempt. The amount depends on your property valuation band (A to H) and your local council rates. You can pay monthly by direct debit. Single occupants get a 25% discount. Full-time students are exempt. If you are on a low income, you may qualify for Council Tax Reduction. Some people receiving Universal Credit or certain benefits also qualify for reductions. You must register for council tax when you move into a new property — contact your local council. Failure to pay can result in court action and additional charges. If you are struggling to pay, contact your council immediately to discuss payment plans rather than ignoring the bills.
