Securing permanent status in the UK is a major milestone for many Zimbabweans in the diaspora. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — also called settled status — removes the time restrictions on your stay and opens the door to British citizenship. For Zimbabweans, there is an added advantage: Zimbabwe now permits dual citizenship, meaning you can become British without giving up your Zimbabwean passport.
## What Is ILR?
ILR grants you the right to live, work, and study in the UK without any time limit. It also allows you to enter and leave the country freely. Most Zimbabweans reach ILR via a five-year qualifying route — typically a Skilled Worker visa, spouse or family visa — or via a ten-year long residence route for those who have accumulated a decade of continuous lawful residence under various visa categories.
## The Five-Year Route
For those on a spouse or family visa, the typical path involves an initial 2.5-year visa followed by a 2.5-year extension, after which ILR becomes available. For Skilled Workers and those on other points-based routes, the five-year clock starts from the date you first entered the UK on a qualifying visa.
**Key requirements for ILR on the five-year route include:**
- **Continuous lawful residence** for five years, with no more than 180 days spent outside the UK in any single 12-month rolling period. This is not a calendar year — it applies to any consecutive 12-month window, so tracking your absences carefully throughout your visa period is essential.
- **Life in the UK Test**: A 24-question computer-based test covering British history, values, and culture. The pass mark is 75% (18 out of 24 correct). The test fee is currently £50 per attempt, payable directly to the test centre. Official study materials are available, and Zimbabweans with English-medium schooling typically find the language aspect straightforward.
- **English language at B1 level**: Usually demonstrated through an approved English language test such as IELTS Life Skills, or through a degree taught in English. Zimbabwe's English-medium education system means many applicants already hold suitable qualifications.
- **No disqualifying criminal convictions**.
- **Documents**: Your current passport, all passports held during your time in the UK, and your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), which can be used for identity purposes up to 18 months after its printed expiry date provided the underlying status remains valid.
## The Ten-Year Long Residence Route
If you have spent ten continuous years in the UK under a combination of lawful visa categories — even if no single visa would qualify you for the five-year route — you may be eligible for ILR via long residence. The ten-year period is counted from the date you first entered the UK, not the date your visa was issued. Applications can be submitted up to 28 days before the ten-year anniversary. Crucially, once you submit your ILR application, you must not leave the UK (or the Common Travel Area) until a decision is received — departure is treated as a withdrawal of the application.
## Costs
As of 2025, the ILR application fee for the main applicant is approximately £2,885, though fees are subject to regular revision and should be confirmed on GOV.UK under "Other applications in the UK." There are typically two service tiers: standard processing and a faster priority service at additional cost. Dependants applying at the same time each pay a separate fee.
## British Citizenship by Naturalisation
Once you hold ILR, you can apply for British citizenship through naturalisation. The standard requirement is to hold ILR for at least 12 months before applying, though spouses or civil partners of British citizens can apply as soon as they receive ILR — without needing to wait the additional year. The overall residence requirement is five years (or three years if married to a British citizen), counting back from the date of the citizenship application.
**Residence rules for naturalisation are slightly different from ILR:**
- No more than 90 days outside the UK in the final 12 months of the qualifying period.
- No more than 450 days absent in total over the full five-year period (or 270 days over three years for spouse applicants).
- You must be free from immigration time restrictions on the date of application and for the 12 months before it — ILR satisfies this.
The naturalisation application fee is currently £1,605 for adults. Successful applicants attend a citizenship ceremony and take an oath of allegiance before the certificate is issued.
## Dual Nationality: A Key Advantage for Zimbabweans
Zimbabwe now permits dual citizenship, which is a significant benefit. Zimbabweans who become British citizens are not required to renounce their Zimbabwean nationality. This matters practically: it preserves your right to hold property in Zimbabwe, maintain a Zimbabwean passport for travel within the region, and retain inheritance and family rights under Zimbabwean law.
One important nuance from GOV.UK's guidance for HM Passport Office: Zimbabwe only recognises dual nationality for citizens who are Zimbabwean **by birth**. Those who acquired Zimbabwean citizenship by registration or by descent may not be permitted to hold dual nationality under Zimbabwean law. If your Zimbabwean citizenship was acquired rather than by birth, it is worth seeking legal advice or contacting the Zimbabwean embassy in London before naturalising as British.
## Practical Tips for Zimbabweans
- Keep meticulous records of every trip outside the UK from the start of your qualifying period — dates of departure and return, destinations, and reasons for travel.
- Book your Life in the UK Test well in advance; test centres can fill up, especially in cities with large African communities.
- If your English language qualification is from a Zimbabwean university, confirm with the Home Office approved list that it qualifies before relying on it for your application.
- Consider using an immigration solicitor for ILR and citizenship applications, particularly if you have had any visa complications, gaps in lawful residence, or previous criminal matters.
- Once you submit your ILR application, do not travel until you have a decision in hand.
