Maintaining a bank account in Zimbabwe while living in the UK is one of the most practical financial decisions a diaspora member can make. It allows you to receive rental income, manage property, pay school fees, support family, and build assets back home — all without relying on third parties. Several Zimbabwean banks actively court diaspora clients, and the process of opening an account remotely has become more accessible, though it still requires careful preparation.
## Why Open a Zimbabwean Bank Account?
Having a local Zimbabwean account gives you direct access to receive remittances without the funds passing through a relative's account first. It also allows you to pay school fees, ZESA bills, and other obligations via internet banking, hold USD in a Foreign Currency Account (FCA), and qualify for diaspora mortgage or loan products. For property investors, it is often a prerequisite for larger financial transactions.
## Understanding Foreign Currency Accounts (FCAs)
The most important account type for diaspora members is the Foreign Currency Account (FCA), sometimes called a Nostro FCA. This is a USD-denominated account, which protects your funds from ZiG or ZWL depreciation. Most Zimbabwean banks offer FCA accounts to both residents and non-residents. These accounts can receive international wire transfers and remittances, making them the preferred vehicle for diaspora banking.
## Steward Bank — Dedicated Diaspora Banking
Steward Bank has one of the most developed diaspora banking offerings among Zimbabwean banks, with products specifically designed for non-residents. The bank offers several account types including a Non-Resident FCA Current Account and a Non-Resident ZWL Current Account, as well as savings, lite, student, and joint diaspora accounts.
For the Non-Resident FCA Current Account, the requirements are:
- Certified copy of a valid Zimbabwean ID, passport, or driver's licence
- Valid proof of foreign residence (lease agreement, utility bill, bank statement, or affidavit — a UK bank statement or council tax bill works well)
- One passport-sized photograph
- Completed application form
- Initial deposit of USD $20
The monthly transaction limit is nil, and the service fee is USD $5. Benefits include internet banking, email notifications, a MasterCard or Visa card linked to the account, the ability to receive remittances directly via WorldRemit, and telegraphic transfer capability for payments such as school fees. The turnaround time for account applications is stated as 24 hours. Applications can be initiated by emailing diasporabanking@stewardbank.co.zw.
The Non-Resident ZWL Current Account follows the same document requirements and comes with a local Zimswitch card, EcoCash wallet integration, and mobile app access via the Steward Bank or Steward Bank Square app (available on Google Play and the Apple App Store).
Existing ZWL account holders can request an FCA to be opened without submitting additional documents.
## CBZ Bank — Established Diaspora Products
CBZ Bank, one of Zimbabwe's largest commercial banks, offers a dedicated Diaspora Account with an online application facility. CBZ's diaspora offering extends beyond basic banking — the bank also provides Diaspora Foreign Denominated Mortgages and Diaspora Home Insurance, making it a strong option if you are planning to purchase property in Zimbabwe from the UK.
CBZ's digital tools include CBZ Touch mobile banking, internet banking, VISA Gold Card access, SMS alerts, and CBZ Pay. The diaspora account application is available directly through the CBZ website at cbz.co.zw.
## FBC Bank — General Requirements
FBC Bank offers foreign currency accounts to non-residents. While their diaspora-specific marketing is less prominent than Steward Bank or CBZ, they are a well-established institution with internet banking capabilities. For UK-based applicants, you would typically need a certified copy of your Zimbabwean ID or passport, proof of UK residence, and passport photographs. Contact FBC directly via their website for current product terms.
## ZB Bank — Non-Resident Account Opening
ZB Bank also accepts non-resident applications. Their requirements include a certified or notarised copy of your valid passport and Zimbabwean ID, proof of residence in your country of domicile, and a certified copy of your work permit or citizenship documentation where applicable.
## Certifying Documents from the UK
A recurring requirement across all Zimbabwean banks is certified copies of documents. In the UK, you can get documents certified by:
- A solicitor or notary public (most reliable for international use)
- A Zimbabwean Embassy or High Commission stamp (the Zimbabwe High Commission is in London at Zimbabwe House, 429 Strand, WC2R 0JR)
- Some banks and post offices, though acceptance varies
For a UK bank statement or utility bill used as proof of address, ensure it is no older than three months at the time of submission.
## Managing Your Account Remotely
All major Zimbabwean banks now offer internet banking and mobile apps. From the UK, you can:
- Check balances and statements
- Make RTGS transfers within Zimbabwe (for ZWL accounts)
- Receive international wire transfers into your FCA
- Receive remittances from services such as WorldRemit, Mukuru, Wise, and Remitly directly into linked accounts
- Pay school fees, utility bills, and institutional invoices
For USD withdrawals or cash access in Zimbabwe, linked Visa or MasterCard debit cards can be used at ATMs or for point-of-sale transactions. Zimswitch cards work at local Zimbabwean ATMs and POS terminals.
## Practical Tips
- Open an FCA (USD account) rather than a ZWL account as your primary diaspora account, to preserve the value of your funds
- Keep your Zimbabwean ID valid — an expired ID can delay account opening and cause problems with subsequent transactions
- Set up a trusted person (family member or property manager) with limited Power of Attorney if you need someone to conduct in-branch transactions on your behalf
- Confirm current service fees directly with the bank before applying, as fee schedules are updated periodically
- Email applications are accepted by Steward Bank; CBZ has an online portal. FBC and ZB Bank may require an in-branch visit for initial setup unless you arrange otherwise in advance
