Switching Visa Categories in the UK — Guide for Zimbabweans

Many Zimbabweans in the UK need to switch from one visa category to another. Common switches: STUDENT TO SKILLED WORKER — after completing a degree, you can apply for the Graduate visa (2 years, no sponsorship needed) then switch to Skilled Worker when you find a sponsoring employer. Or switch directly from Student to Skilled Worker if you have a CoS. GRADUATE TO SKILLED WORKER — the Graduate visa gives 2 years of unrestricted work. Before it expires, you need to switch to Skilled Worker (with employer sponsorship) to stay long-term. The 2 years on Graduate visa do NOT count toward the 5 years needed for ILR. VISITOR TO OTHER CATEGORIES — generally you CANNOT switch from a visitor visa to any other category from within the UK. You must return home and apply from there. This catches many Zimbabweans off guard. FAMILY VISA SWITCHING — you can switch from Skilled Worker to a Family visa if you marry a British citizen, though the income requirement must be met by your sponsor. KEY RULES: Not all switches are permitted from within the UK — check each specific route. You must apply before your current visa expires. If your application is submitted in time, you can stay in the UK while it is processed (Section 3C leave). Switching usually requires a new application fee and IHS payment.
