UK Asylum System — Information for Zimbabweans

While the majority of Zimbabweans in the UK are on work, student, or family visas, some have claimed or may consider claiming asylum. KEY FACTS: Asylum is protection given to someone who has fled their home country because they face persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular social group. TO CLAIM: You must claim at the earliest opportunity after arriving in the UK. Claims are made to the Home Office. You will be interviewed about your reasons for seeking protection. PROCESS: After claiming, you receive an Asylum Registration Card (ARC). You may be housed in Home Office accommodation (you cannot choose where). You receive a small weekly allowance (approximately £49.18/week for a single adult). You CANNOT work while your claim is being processed (unless it has been outstanding for 12+ months, in which case you can apply for permission to work in shortage occupation roles). DECISION: The Home Office grants refugee status (5 years leave, can work, access benefits, path to ILR) or refuses the claim (you can appeal). ZIMBABWE-SPECIFIC CONTEXT: Zimbabwe is not currently on the UK's list of countries where a general grant of asylum is appropriate. Claims are assessed individually.
