Opening a UK bank account is one of the first practical steps for newly arrived Zimbabweans. WHAT YOU NEED: Passport or BRP, proof of UK address (utility bill, tenancy agreement, or employer letter — this is often the hardest part for new arrivals). EASIEST OPTIONS FOR NEW ARRIVALS: Monzo, Starling, and Revolut — digital banks that often accept applications with just a passport and a selfie, no proof of address initially. These are the fastest route to having a working UK account. TRADITIONAL BANKS: Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander — may require proof of address which can be difficult if you have just arrived. Some accept a letter from your employer or university. BASIC BANK ACCOUNTS: If you are turned down for a standard account, you have a legal right to a basic bank account — these are free, allow direct debits and standing orders, but no overdraft. Ask for a 'basic account' specifically. IMPORTANT: Your bank account is essential for receiving wages (most UK employers pay by bank transfer), paying rent, and sending remittances. Set one up as quickly as possible after arriving. CREDIT HISTORY: As a new arrival you have no UK credit history. This means you may be rejected for credit cards, phone contracts, and some rental agreements. Building credit takes time — a mobile phone contract or a credit builder card is a good start.
