UK Benefits and Public Funds — Eligibility for Zimbabweans

Access to UK benefits and public services depends on your immigration status. MOST VISA HOLDERS (Skilled Worker, Student, Family visa initial grant): Have "No Recourse to Public Funds" (NRPF) stamped on their visa. This means you CANNOT claim: Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Child Benefit, Tax Credits, income-based JSA, or social housing. You CAN access: NHS (covered by Immigration Health Surcharge), state education for children, police/fire/emergency services. FAMILY VISA: Has NRPF by default but you can apply to have this condition lifted if you are destitute or at risk of destitution. ILR HOLDERS: Full access to all benefits and public funds — same as British citizens. BRITISH CITIZENS: Full access. IMPORTANT NUANCES: (1) Even with NRPF, your children born in the UK may have citizenship rights; (2) Domestic abuse victims on spousal visas can access the Destitution Domestic Violence Concession (DDVC) for emergency support; (3) Council Tax must be paid by all residents regardless of immigration status; (4) Free school meals may be available for children of NRPF visa holders in some circumstances.
