UK BRP — Biometric Residence Permit Guide

The Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is the physical card that confirms your immigration status in the UK. It shows your name, date of birth, immigration status, and any conditions (like work restrictions). KEY FACTS: All non-EEA nationals on visas longer than 6 months receive a BRP. You must collect it from a designated Post Office within 10 days of arrival (or within 10 days of the date on your decision letter if switching within the UK). IF LOST OR STOLEN: Report it immediately to the Home Office using the online reporting tool. Apply for a replacement (costs £75). If you are outside the UK when it is lost/stolen, you need to apply for a Replacement BRP Visa to re-enter the UK. EXPIRY: BRPs currently have a maximum validity to 31 December 2024 — the UK government planned to replace them with eVisas (digital immigration status). Most BRP holders should now have an eVisa linked to their UKVI account. Check your status at gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status. IMPORTANT: Your BRP expiry date may be different from your actual visa expiry date. Your visa validity is shown in your passport or your online immigration status, not just the BRP card. EMPLOYERS AND LANDLORDS now check your right to work/rent using the online share code system rather than the physical BRP.
