Council tax is a local tax that everyone living in the UK must pay (regardless of immigration status). It funds local services — rubbish collection, street lighting, police, fire service, schools, and social care. HOW IT WORKS: Each property is assigned a band (A to H) based on its value. Your annual council tax depends on the band and your local council — typically £1,200-2,500/year for a Band C-D property. Payment is usually monthly over 10 months (April-January). WHO PAYS: The person or people living in the property. If you share a house, the bill is usually split. Some people qualify for discounts: 25% single person discount (if you live alone), full exemption for full-time students, council tax reduction for low income (apply to your local council), and certain visa holders may be exempt (check with your council). IMPORTANT: Council tax must be paid. Failure to pay can result in court action, bailiffs, and attachment of earnings. If you are struggling to pay, contact your council immediately — they can set up payment plans and assess you for reductions. MOVING: When you move house, inform your old and new councils. You pay council tax at your new address from the date you move in.
