UK Driving Licence — Converting a Zimbabwe Licence

Zimbabweans who move to the UK can drive on their Zimbabwe driving licence for 12 months from the date they become resident. After 12 months, you MUST obtain a UK driving licence. CONVERSION: Zimbabwe is NOT on the list of countries whose licences can be directly exchanged for a UK licence (designated countries include EU, USA, Australia, Japan, etc.). This means Zimbabweans must take the FULL UK driving test — both theory and practical. THE PROCESS: (1) Apply for a provisional driving licence (costs £34 online, £43 by post). You need proof of identity, a passport photo, and your National Insurance number. (2) Pass the theory test (£23, multiple choice and hazard perception). (3) Pass the practical driving test (£62 weekday, £75 weekends/evenings). You can practise with a qualified instructor or with someone who has held a UK licence for 3+ years. TIPS: Many Zimbabweans find the UK test challenging because of different road systems (roundabouts, motorways), road markings, and the emphasis on mirror checks. Budget for 20-40 hours of professional lessons (£25-40/hour). Book theory and practical tests early — waiting times can be 3-6 months in busy areas. INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT: If you need to drive in other countries from the UK, you may need an IDP (available from the Post Office, £5.50). Your Zimbabwe licence is not valid for long-term driving in most countries.
