UK Employment Rights for Zimbabwean Workers

If you have the right to work in the UK (through your visa), you are protected by UK employment law from day one. These rights apply regardless of nationality. Key rights: - National Minimum Wage (from April 2025): £12.21/hour for workers aged 21+, £10.00 for 18-20, £7.55 for under 18 - Maximum working hours: 48 hours per week average (you can opt out voluntarily) - Paid annual leave: 28 days per year (5.6 weeks) including bank holidays - Statutory Sick Pay (SSP): £116.75 per week for up to 28 weeks - Maternity leave: 52 weeks, with Statutory Maternity Pay for 39 weeks - Paternity leave: 2 weeks - Protection from unfair dismissal (after 2 years of continuous employment) - Protection from discrimination based on race, nationality, religion, gender, age, disability - Right to a written statement of employment within 2 months - Right to payslips showing all deductions Common issues for Zimbabweans: - Some employers exploit workers on visa routes by underpaying or threatening to withdraw sponsorship.
