UK Family Visa — Spouse and Partner Route

Zimbabweans married to or in a genuine relationship with a UK citizen or settled person can apply for a Family visa. KEY REQUIREMENTS: (1) RELATIONSHIP — must be legally married, in a civil partnership, or in a genuine relationship with cohabitation for 2+ years (unmarried partners). (2) FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT — the UK-based sponsor must have a minimum income of £29,000 (as of 2024, rising to £34,500 then £38,700 in phases). Income can come from employment, self-employment, pension, or a combination. Cash savings above £16,000 can supplement income. (3) ENGLISH LANGUAGE — applicant must pass A1 level SELT for initial application, A2 for extension, B1 for settlement. (4) ADEQUATE ACCOMMODATION — must show the family won't be living in overcrowded housing. (5) GENUINE RELATIONSHIP — immigration officers assess whether the relationship is genuine through interviews, evidence of communication, visits, photos, etc. COSTS: £1,846 application fee, IHS £1,035/year, biometrics. TIMELINE: Initial visa granted for 33 months (from outside UK). Must extend once (further 30 months) before applying for ILR after 5 years total. CHILDREN: Dependent children under 18 can be included. COMMON CHALLENGES: The income threshold is the biggest barrier — many sponsoring partners, especially recent immigrants themselves, don't meet the minimum. Proof of genuine relationship can be challenging for long-distance couples.
