UK Immigration — Common Scams and Pitfalls for Zimbabweans

The Zimbabwean diaspora community is frequently targeted by immigration scams. Common pitfalls to watch for: (1) FAKE IMMIGRATION ADVISORS — unregistered individuals or agencies offering visa services. In the UK, only OISC-registered advisors or solicitors regulated by the SRA can provide immigration advice for a fee. Check registration at oisc.gov.uk. (2) FAKE JOB OFFERS — scammers offering Skilled Worker sponsorship in exchange for upfront fees. Legitimate employers do not charge workers for sponsorship. If someone asks you to pay thousands for a CoS, it is almost certainly a scam. (3) CARE WORKER RECRUITMENT SCAMS — agencies charging excessive fees to Zimbabwean care workers for UK placement. Under UK law, the employer pays recruitment costs, not the worker. Report exploitative agencies to the GLAA (Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority). (4) FAKE EMBASSY SERVICES — people claiming to offer fast-track passport processing outside the official embassy. Only the Zimbabwe Embassy in London can process passports. (5) MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE — being offered money to marry someone for immigration purposes. This is a criminal offence in the UK. (6) OVERSTAYING — remaining in the UK after your visa expires. This creates a 10-year ban from re-entry and makes future applications extremely difficult. Always apply to extend before your visa expires.
