Last updated 8 March 2026

General information only, not immigration or legal advice. Rules and requirements change; check the relevant official source before acting.
A National Insurance (NI) number is essential for working legally in the UK and paying the correct tax and National Insurance contributions. HOW TO APPLY: (1) Call the National Insurance number application line (0800 141 2075) or apply online through gov.uk. (2) You will be asked to provide identity documents — passport, BRP/eVisa, and proof of your right to work. (3) You may be called for an interview (in person or by phone) to verify your identity. (4) Your NI number is sent by post to your UK address, typically within 4-16 weeks. CAN YOU WORK WITHOUT ONE? Yes — you can start work before receiving your NI number. Tell your employer you have applied and they can use a temporary number. You will not lose any pay or tax credits. However, you should apply as soon as possible after arriving. YOUR NI NUMBER IS FOR LIFE: Once issued, it does not change even if you change jobs, visa status, or become a British citizen. FORMAT: Two letters, six numbers, one letter (e.g., AB123456C). IMPORTANCE: Your NI number is linked to your tax records, National Insurance contributions (which affect your State Pension), and benefits entitlement. Keep it safe and do not share it unnecessarily.
