The UK Skilled Worker Visa is the primary route through which Zimbabweans secure employment in Britain. Replacing the old Tier 2 (General) visa in December 2020, it operates on a points-based system requiring applicants to accumulate at least 70 points across several criteria before a visa is granted. ## Who Is Coming and Through Which Routes In 2025, 841 Zimbabwean nationals were granted UK work visas under either the Skilled Worker or Health & Care Worker routes — a significant 68% drop compared to 2024. Of those, 630 (roughly 75%) came through the Health & Care Worker route, reflecting the continuing reliance of the NHS and social care sector on Zimbabwean professionals. The remaining 211 were granted standard Skilled Worker visas. The top occupations for Zimbabweans in 2025 were: - Care workers and home carers (415 grants) - Social workers (75) - Vehicle technicians, mechanics and electricians (55) - Senior care workers (41) - Generalist medical practitioners (24) - Registered nursing professionals (21) - Welding trades (13) - Engineering technicians (12) - Electricians and electrical fitters (11) - Chartered and certified accountants (10) This data confirms that while healthcare dominates, there is a growing presence of Zimbabwean tradespeople and engineers entering on the standard Skilled Worker route. ## Core Eligibility Requirements To qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa, an applicant must satisfy the following mandatory criteria: **Job offer from a licensed sponsor:** The employer must hold a Home Office Sponsor Licence and issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for the specific role. Without this, no application can proceed. **Eligible occupation:** The job must appear on the official list of eligible skilled occupations, broadly covering roles at RQF Level 3 (A-level equivalent) and above. **Salary threshold:** As of 2024, the minimum general salary requirement is £38,700 per year, or the going rate for the specific occupation — whichever is higher. Certain shortage occupations or roles with additional tradable points may permit a lower salary, but the general threshold applies to the majority of applications. **English language proficiency:** Applicants must demonstrate English at B1 level or above. Zimbabweans may qualify for an exemption given that Zimbabwe is an English-speaking country, but this should be confirmed with the sponsoring employer or an immigration adviser before applying, as individual circumstances vary. **Financial requirement:** Applicants must show they have held at least £1,270 in their bank account for 28 consecutive days immediately before submitting the application. This requirement is waived if the applicant has been living lawfully in the UK for 12 months or more at the point of application. ## The Points-Based Structure The 70 points required break down broadly as follows: - Approved job offer from a licensed sponsor: 20 points - Job at the required skill level: 20 points - English language requirement: 10 points - Salary at or above the threshold: 20 points Additional tradable points can be earned through shortage occupation status, a relevant PhD, or a lower salary offset — though these combinations require careful navigation. ## Zimbabwe-Specific Considerations When sponsoring a Zimbabwean national, UK employers should be aware of several nationality-specific factors: - **Police clearance:** A certificate from the Zimbabwe Republic Police may be requested as part of the application process. - **Qualification verification:** Degrees from Zimbabwean institutions may require verification through ZIMCHE (Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education) before they are accepted as evidence of qualification. - **Visa application centre:** Applications from Zimbabwe are processed through UKVCAS / VFS Global in Harare. - **English language exemption:** May apply for Zimbabwean nationals but should be confirmed before submission. ## How Sponsorship Works The sponsorship process begins with the UK employer, not the applicant. The employer must hold or apply for a Sponsor Licence from the Home Office. Licence applications take up to 8 weeks to process, or 10 working days with priority processing (at an additional cost of £500, subject to slot availability). Licences, as of April 2024, no longer expire and remain valid indefinitely provided the employer meets ongoing compliance duties. Once licenced, the employer assigns a Certificate of Sponsorship to the individual worker, who then uses it to apply for their visa. ## Visa Costs The Skilled Worker Visa fee ranges from £827 to £1,423 depending on the applicant's individual circumstances, duration, and whether applying from inside or outside the UK. The Immigration Health Surcharge is paid on top of this and represents a significant additional cost, currently set at £1,035 per year per applicant. ## Settlement and Study Rights The Skilled Worker route leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five continuous years in the UK under qualifying routes. There is no cap on the number of extensions, and study is permitted alongside work — though the sponsoring employer should be informed. The visa does not grant access to public funds. ## Practical Advice for Zimbabweans For those actively seeking sponsorship, searching the Home Office's public register of licensed sponsors is the most reliable starting point. Job boards that filter by visa sponsorship availability, such as Hunt UK Visa Sponsors, list current vacancies from licenced employers. Roles in healthcare, engineering trades, and accountancy show the clearest pathways based on recent grant data. Having ZIMCHE-verified degree certificates and a Zimbabwe Republic Police clearance certificate ready before applying will reduce delays during employer due diligence.
