UK Skilled Worker Visa for Zimbabweans: Eligibility, Sponsorship, Salary Thresholds and Settlement

The Skilled Worker visa remains the primary route for Zimbabweans seeking to live and work in the UK outside of healthcare. Since April 2024, the route has undergone two major overhauls that have significantly raised the salary bar for entry, and Zimbabwean professionals considering this path need to understand exactly where they stand under the current rules. ## How the Route Works To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that holds a valid Home Office sponsor licence. That employer issues you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which is a reference number tied to a specific role. The job must appear on the list of eligible occupations under the SOC 2020 classification system, and the salary offered must meet the applicable threshold — both the general minimum and the occupation-specific going rate, whichever is higher. Zimbabwean nationals with qualifications in engineering, accountancy, IT, teaching, law, and financial services have historically used this route. For those in nursing, medicine, and social care, the Health and Care Worker Visa — a sub-category of the Skilled Worker route — is often more appropriate, as it carries reduced visa fees and exempts holders from paying the Immigration Health Surcharge. ## Salary Thresholds: What Applies in 2025 and Beyond The salary requirements have changed substantially in a short period: - **Before April 2024:** The general threshold was £26,200 per year. - **From 4 April 2024:** The threshold rose sharply to £38,700. - **From 22 July 2025:** The threshold increased again to £41,700 for new applicants. For new Skilled Worker applications — meaning those where the Certificate of Sponsorship was issued on or after 4 April 2024 — the current standard threshold is £41,700. Applicants must meet both this general floor and 100% of the going rate for their specific occupation code. Where the going rate exceeds £41,700, that higher figure applies. The system includes a points-trading mechanism. Applicants can qualify at reduced salary thresholds of £37,500 or £33,400 if they hold certain qualifications or are being hired into a shortage occupation. However, these discounts are structured and conditional — they are not automatic. ## Transitional Rates for Existing Visa Holders If you already hold a Skilled Worker visa and are extending it, the rules depend on when your original CoS was issued: - **CoS issued before 4 April 2024:** You may extend under the transitional rate of £31,300 (or lower if trading points), provided you apply before 4 April 2030 and have held continuous permission. - **CoS issued on or after 4 April 2024:** You must meet the full current threshold at extension. For example, a Zimbabwean nurse who arrived in 2023 and is now extending their visa in 2026 would still be covered by the £31,300 transitional rate — not the £41,700 figure. One critical exception: **transitional rates do not apply when applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)**. At settlement stage, all applicants must meet the full £41,700 general threshold or the applicable going rate, regardless of which transitional arrangement covered their earlier leave. ## Finding a Sponsored Role Only employers with a current Home Office sponsor licence can issue a CoS. The Home Office publishes a register of licensed sponsors, which is publicly searchable. Several job platforms — including Hunt UK Visa Sponsors and Hiredge — allow candidates to filter specifically for roles from licensed sponsors, removing the need to manually verify each employer. For healthcare workers, NHS trusts and registered care providers are among the most active sponsors. Zimbabwean nurses in particular have a well-established pathway: qualify with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), secure a sponsored offer, and apply via the Health and Care Worker Visa route. Hiredge and similar platforms offer sponsored job alerts filtered by healthcare role and visa eligibility. ## Key Eligibility Requirements In addition to salary, Skilled Worker visa applicants must demonstrate: - A valid Zimbabwean passport - A confirmed job offer in an eligible occupation from a licensed sponsor - English language proficiency (usually B1 level or equivalent) - That the role meets the skill level requirement (RQF Level 3 or above, with a shift from July 2025 towards RQF Level 6 for most standard roles, with limited exceptions) There is no requirement to have a degree per se, but the role itself must be classified at the appropriate skill level under the SOC 2020 system. ## Route to Settlement After five continuous years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. From ILR, British citizenship becomes available after a further twelve months. The five-year clock runs from the date of your first Skilled Worker leave — meaning those who arrived before 2024 may already be approaching or past this threshold. Planning ahead matters. The direction of travel on salary thresholds has been consistently upward, and the rules that governed applications in 2022 or 2023 look significantly different from those in force today. Anyone targeting a new application in 2026 or 2027 should verify the current going rate for their specific occupation code directly against the Home Office's Appendix Skilled Occupations before accepting a job offer.
