The UK Skilled Worker visa remains one of the most important pathways for Zimbabweans seeking to live and work legally in Britain. Since its launch in December 2020 — replacing the previous Tier 2 General route — tens of thousands of Zimbabweans have secured work visas, with the majority coming through the related Health and Care Worker route. Understanding the current rules, salary thresholds, and recent changes is essential for anyone planning to apply. ## Who Qualifies Zimbabwean nationality is not itself a barrier. Any Zimbabwean national can apply for a Skilled Worker visa provided they meet three core requirements: a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that holds a Home Office sponsor licence; a role that falls within the eligible occupations list (categorised by Standard Occupational Classification codes); and a salary that meets the applicable threshold. The employer, not the applicant, must hold the sponsor licence — so finding a licensed sponsor is the critical first step. ## Salary Thresholds: The 2024 and 2025 Increases The most significant recent change came on 4 April 2024, when the general salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas increased sharply from £26,200 to £38,700. This represented a move from the 25th percentile to the median (50th percentile) of equivalent ONS earnings data for 2023. Occupation-specific 'going rate' thresholds increased in parallel. The threshold rose again in July 2025 to £41,700, which is now the standard general salary floor. In practice, the minimum salary requirement is whichever is higher: the general threshold or the occupation-specific going rate. For some roles, the going rate exceeds £41,700 significantly — for example, software development professionals face an occupation-specific threshold of approximately £49,430. ## Health and Care Worker Route Healthcare roles have been partially shielded from the steepest increases because their salaries are set by nationally agreed NHS pay scales. For the year ending March 2025, most health and care jobs carried a minimum salary of £29,000, with care workers facing a lower floor of around £23,200. This explains why the Health and Care Worker visa has remained the dominant route for Zimbabweans: in 2025, approximately 75% of the 841 work visas granted to Zimbabwean nationals came through this route. The most common occupation was care workers and home carers (415 grants in 2025), followed by social workers (75 grants) and vehicle technicians, mechanics and electricians (55 grants). It is worth noting that the total number of grants in 2025 (841) represented a 68% fall compared to 2024, reflecting tighter rules and higher salary thresholds across the board. ## New Entrant Discounts A reduced salary rate applies to 'new entrants' — broadly, those under 26 years of age, or those switching from a Graduate or Student visa at the time of application. New entrants benefit from a 20% reduction on the general threshold and a 30% reduction on the occupation-specific going rate. Under the current rules, this produces a new entrant general threshold of approximately £30,960 (or £23,200 for healthcare roles). However, applicants must still meet whichever is higher between the discounted general threshold and the discounted going rate, so in higher-paid occupations the discount may offer limited practical benefit. ## Immigration Salary List Certain shortage occupations appear on the Immigration Salary List (ISL), formerly the Shortage Occupation List. Employers sponsoring workers in ISL roles benefit from a reduced general salary threshold of £30,960 rather than £41,700. However, this reduction applies only to the general threshold — the occupation-specific going rate must still be met in full. The ISL was significantly shortened in April 2024 when the 20% SOL discount was removed. ## The Sponsorship Process The employer applies for and maintains a sponsor licence with the Home Office. Once a job offer is made, the employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) — a unique reference number the applicant uses in their visa application. Applicants then apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration portal, submitting the CoS reference, a valid Zimbabwean passport, English language evidence, and proof of funds. Healthcare workers typically also need to demonstrate professional registration (for example, NMC registration for nurses). ## What to Expect From 2026 Onward The UK immigration landscape is continuing to tighten. Salary thresholds have already risen twice in 14 months and further adjustments are possible. Rules on Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) are also under review, with longer qualifying periods being considered. Family sponsorship requirements have risen separately — the minimum income to sponsor a spouse under the family route increased to £29,000 in 2024, with further increases planned. Zimbabweans planning to apply in 2026 or beyond should research current thresholds at the point of application and seek professional immigration advice if their salary or role type is close to the borderline.
