The UK Skilled Worker visa has undergone significant changes since April 2024, with further reforms introduced in July 2025. For Zimbabweans planning to work in the UK, understanding these shifting requirements is essential — the pathway remains viable but considerably narrower than it was even two years ago.
## How the Skilled Worker Visa Works
To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, an applicant must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer that holds a valid Home Office sponsor licence. The employer assigns a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which the applicant uses when submitting their visa application. Zimbabwean nationals must apply for entry clearance before travelling — there is no switching from a visit visa to a work visa inside the UK.
Sponsor licences are held by individual employers, not sectors. The employer must renew their licence every four years and is subject to compliance visits from UKVI. If an employer loses their licence, sponsored workers can be left in a precarious position, so it is worth verifying a prospective employer's sponsorship status before accepting an offer.
## The April 2024 Changes
From 4 April 2024, the Home Office raised the general salary threshold for new Skilled Worker applicants from £26,200 to £38,700 per year. At the same time, the going rate for individual occupations shifted from the 25th percentile to the 50th percentile of ONS pay data — meaning the minimum salary required for many specific roles rose considerably above £38,700.
A reduced new entrant rate was retained for those under 26 or transitioning from a Graduate or Student visa, set at £30,960 (up from £20,960) or 70% of the going rate, whichever is higher. In practice, this discount offers less relief than it once did given the overall threshold increases.
Workers already sponsored before 4 April 2024 were given transitional protection from the 50th percentile requirement. However, when they come to extend their visa, change employer, or change role, they become subject to updated salary thresholds based on the 25th percentile using current ONS data — which in most cases still means a meaningful salary increase.
## The July 2025 Changes
Further reforms came into effect on 22 July 2025. The general salary threshold increased again, from £38,700 to £41,700 per year. More significantly, the skill level requirement returned to RQF Level 6 — equivalent to a bachelor's degree or professional qualification — reversing a temporary lowering that had been in place since 2022.
This change removed approximately 180 occupation codes from the eligible list. Among those closed to new overseas sponsorship were care worker roles under SOC codes 6135 and 6136, which had been among the most common routes for Zimbabweans entering the UK. A Temporary Shortage List allows some RQF Level 3–5 occupations to continue being sponsored until at least 31 December 2026, but this is explicitly a time-limited arrangement.
As of July 2025, the salary thresholds vary depending on when a worker was first sponsored and whether any discounts apply, with the standard minimum (Option A) sitting at £41,700. Discounted rates for new entrants or health and education roles can reduce this, but the floor in most cases remains well above previous levels.
## What This Means for Zimbabweans
In 2025, 841 Zimbabwean nationals were granted UK work visas through the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker routes — a 68% decline compared to 2024. Around 75% came through the Health and Care Worker route. The most common occupations were care workers and home carers (415 grants), social workers (75), and vehicle technicians and mechanics (55).
The closure of care worker codes to new overseas sponsorship represents a significant shift, as this had been one of the primary entry points for Zimbabweans without degree-level qualifications. Going forward, the Skilled Worker route increasingly favours those in graduate-level professional roles — nurses, engineers, IT professionals, social workers, and teachers — who can command salaries at or above the £41,700 threshold.
For those already in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa, the priority is understanding exactly which transitional cohort they fall into, as the applicable salary threshold on renewal depends on the date of first sponsorship.
## Practical Steps
- Verify that any prospective employer holds an active Home Office sponsor licence before accepting a role — this can be checked on the government's register of licensed sponsors.
- Confirm the SOC occupation code for your role and check whether it remains eligible post-July 2025, particularly if it is not at RQF Level 6.
- If your role falls on the Temporary Shortage List, be aware that sponsorship eligibility may lapse after 31 December 2026.
- New entrants under 26 or on a Graduate visa should calculate whether the discounted rate actually applies to their specific occupation's going rate before relying on it.
- Those planning to sponsor dependants should note that financial requirements for family reunification have also increased separately, and Zimbabwean households should budget accordingly.
- Immigration rules in this area have changed multiple times in the past two years and are likely to continue evolving. Professional immigration advice is strongly recommended before submitting any application or accepting a sponsorship offer.
