UK Skilled Worker Visa for Zimbabweans: Sponsorship, Salary Thresholds, Switching Visas, and Settlement

The UK Skilled Worker visa remains one of the most accessible legal pathways for Zimbabweans to live and work in Britain long-term. Nationality is not a barrier — Zimbabwean nationals qualify on exactly the same basis as any other non-settled worker, provided they meet the three core requirements: a job offer from a Home Office-licensed sponsor, a role that appears on the eligible occupations list, and a salary that meets the applicable threshold. Home Office data shows that 841 Zimbabwean nationals were granted Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visas in 2025, though this represented a 68% decline on 2024 figures. Roughly 75% of those visas came through the Health and Care Worker route, reflecting the heavy concentration of Zimbabweans in NHS and social care roles. Top occupations include care workers and home carers, social workers, and vehicle technicians. ## Salary Thresholds (as of July 2025) This is the area of greatest change and the most common source of confusion. The threshold you must meet depends on when your first Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) was issued. **New applicants (first CoS issued on or after 4 April 2024, or after 22 July 2025):** The general salary threshold is now £41,700 per year, or the going rate for your specific occupation code under SOC 2020 — whichever is higher. The going rate is calculated at the 50th percentile of average UK earnings for that role. Discount options exist under the tradeable points system: - **Option B – PhD (non-STEM):** £37,500 general threshold, 90% of going rate - **Option C – PhD (STEM) or Option D – Immigration Salary List (ISL) role:** £33,400 general threshold - **Option E – New Entrant:** £33,400 general threshold, 70% of going rate. This applies if you are under 26, a recent graduate, switching from a student or graduate visa, or in formal professional training. The absolute floor under any discounted option is £33,400. **Existing workers (first CoS issued before 4 April 2024):** Transitional protections apply until at least 4 April 2030. The general salary threshold for extensions is £31,300, which can reduce further to £28,200 or £25,000 through tradeable points. Going rates are assessed at the 25th percentile rather than the 50th. This protection is significant — it means many Zimbabweans already on the route can renew without meeting the full £41,700 bar, provided they remain continuously sponsored. **Health and Care Worker route:** This sub-route carries separate, lower thresholds and is available to those working in specified NHS, local authority, or CQC-regulated social care roles. Salary thresholds for this route can go as low as £25,000 depending on the option applied. However, roles on the Temporary Shortage List (TSL) do not attract salary discounts, and dependants are generally not permitted when sponsoring under TSL codes. ## Sponsorship Requirements Your employer must hold a valid Home Office sponsor licence. The employer issues you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which is a unique reference number — not a physical document — that you use when making your visa application. Sponsorship cannot be self-arranged; a licensed UK employer must formally assign the CoS to you. The role must be at RQF Level 6 or above for most Skilled Worker categories (broadly degree level), though some exceptions exist for shortage occupations and roles on the Immigration Salary List. ## Switching from Other Visas Zimbabweans already in the UK on certain visa categories can switch to the Skilled Worker route without leaving the country. Those on a Student visa or Graduate visa are among the most common switchers, and switching from a Graduate visa also qualifies a person as a New Entrant, giving access to the lower £33,400 salary threshold. Switching from a Skilled Worker visa to another Skilled Worker role (changing employers) requires a new CoS from the new sponsor and a fresh visa application or in-country change of employment request. Those on visitor visas cannot switch in-country and must apply from outside the UK. ## Route to Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) After five continuous years on the Skilled Worker route, you become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). The five years can include time on a predecessor Tier 2 (General) visa. You must demonstrate continuous lawful residence, meet the English language requirement, and pass the Life in the UK test. Gaps in employment or salary below the required threshold during that period can jeopardise the application, so maintaining careful records throughout is advisable. Once ILR is granted, you can apply for British citizenship after a further qualifying period — typically one year of ILR, subject to the full naturalisation criteria. ## Bringing Family Members Eligible dependants — spouses, civil partners, unmarried partners, and children under 18 — can join or accompany a Skilled Worker visa holder. However, dependants are not generally permitted when the sponsoring role falls under the Temporary Shortage List. The financial requirement for sponsoring a spouse or partner through Appendix FM (a separate, parallel requirement) has also increased substantially, rising from £18,600 to £29,000 and expected to reach approximately £38,700 by early 2025 under the phased increases announced in 2024. ## Practical Steps for Zimbabwean Applicants - Confirm your employer holds or is willing to obtain a sponsor licence before accepting any job offer contingent on sponsorship. - Verify that your specific role and SOC code appears on the eligible occupations list and that the salary offered meets the applicable threshold — not just the general threshold, but the going rate for your code if that is higher. - If you are a recent graduate or under 26, explore whether the New Entrant route applies, as this significantly lowers the salary bar. - Gather supporting documents early: qualifications, English language evidence (IELTS or equivalent, or a degree taught in English), valid passport, and tuberculosis test certificate if required. - Biometric appointments for Zimbabwean applicants based in Zimbabwe are processed through TLScontact in Harare or Johannesburg — confirm availability before booking. Given the pace of change in UK immigration rules since 2024, verify current thresholds and eligible occupation codes directly on the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) pages before submitting any application.
