For Zimbabweans in the UK who want to bring a spouse, civil partner, or child to join them, the UK family visa route is the legal pathway — but it is one of the most demanding immigration processes the Home Office administers. Understanding the requirements in full before applying can save significant time, money, and heartache. ## Who Can Sponsor a Spouse or Partner Visa? The person in the UK — known as the sponsor — must be a British citizen, hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), have settled status, or hold refugee status or humanitarian protection. Both partners must be aged 18 or over. The couple must demonstrate that their relationship is genuine, subsisting, and that they intend to live together permanently in the UK. This applies even when a marriage certificate already exists — the Home Office will still expect substantial evidence of an ongoing relationship. ## Financial Requirement: The Key Hurdle Since April 2024, the minimum income threshold for new spouse visa applications rose sharply from £18,600 to £29,000 per year.
