For the hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans settled in the UK, bringing a spouse or partner from home is one of the most common — and most administratively demanding — immigration processes they will face. The UK Spouse Visa (formally part of the Family Visa category) allows a Zimbabwean national to join a British citizen or settled person in the UK. Getting the application right from the outset saves months of delays and significant expense.
## Who Can Apply
A Zimbabwean national can apply for a UK Spouse Visa if their UK-based partner is a British citizen, holds Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), or has recognised refugee or humanitarian protection status. The relationship must be a legally registered marriage, a civil partnership, or an unmarried partnership where the couple has lived together continuously for at least two years.
Applicants must be 18 or older, and the relationship must be genuine and subsisting — not a marriage of convenience.
## Financial Requirements (2025)
The financial threshold increased significantly in April 2024. As of 2025, the UK-based sponsor must demonstrate a gross annual income of at least **£29,000**. This threshold is expected to rise to **£34,500** and eventually **£38,700** in mid-2026. Only the sponsor's UK income is counted in most cases — income the Zimbabwean applicant earns in Zimbabwe does not contribute toward this threshold.
If the sponsor does not meet the income requirement, savings can substitute. The minimum savings threshold is **£88,500** held for at least six months (rising to £102,250 from April 2024 figures). A hybrid of income and savings is also permitted, with the savings floor in that case set at £16,000.
Sponsors receiving certain disability benefits — including Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Carer's Allowance — are assessed differently and may not need to meet the standard income threshold.
If the sponsor is self-employed or a company director, additional documents are required, including CT600 Corporate Tax Returns, unaudited business accounts, business bank statements, dividend vouchers, and a current Companies House appointment report — typically covering the period 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2026.
## English Language Requirement
Zimbabwean applicants must demonstrate English at B1 level on the Common European Framework. This is typically met through an IELTS Life Skills test or by holding a degree taught entirely in English. Given that Zimbabwe's education system is English-medium, many Zimbabwean applicants pass this requirement without difficulty, though the formal test is still mandatory unless an exemption applies.
## Tuberculosis (TB) Test
Zimbabwe is on the UK's list of countries where a TB test is required before a visa application. Applicants must attend an approved clinic in Zimbabwe and obtain a certificate confirming they are free of active pulmonary TB. This certificate must accompany the application.
## Accommodation Requirement
The sponsor must show that adequate accommodation is available in the UK that does not breach overcrowding legislation. This can be a rented property, an owner-occupied home, or a family member's property — provided written consent is obtained from the property owner.
## Biometrics: VFS Global Harare
Applications are submitted online, but Zimbabwean applicants must book a biometrics appointment at **VFS Global in Harare**, where fingerprints and photographs are taken. Documents can be uploaded personally through the VFS portal or via a paid scanning service at the centre. All documents must be in the correct format and clearly legible.
## Application Fee and Immigration Health Surcharge
The visa application fee for applications submitted outside the UK is **£1,938**. Applicants must also pay the **Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)** for the full visa period. The IHS is currently set at £1,035 per year of the visa, meaning the total surcharge for a 2.5-year initial visa is approximately **£2,587**. Payment receipts must be retained.
## Processing Time
Current processing times for spouse visa applications submitted outside the UK are approximately **24 weeks** from the date of the biometric appointment. This figure can vary and applicants should check the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) website for the most current estimates before applying. Priority processing options may be available at additional cost.
## Duration, Extension, and Settlement
A successful initial application grants **33 months** (approximately 2 years and 9 months) of leave to remain. Before expiry, the holder must apply to extend for a further **30 months**. After five continuous years of lawful residence in the UK — across the initial visa and extension — the holder becomes eligible to apply for **Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)**.
ILR requirements include:
- No more than 180 days' absence from the UK in any 12-month period across the five years
- Passing the Life in the UK Test (24 questions, 75% pass mark)
- Demonstrating B1 English again at ILR stage
- No disqualifying criminal convictions
Following ILR, the path to **British citizenship by naturalisation** becomes available after a further qualifying period.
## Rights on a Spouse Visa
Once in the UK on a spouse visa, the holder has full permission to work, run a business, and study. There are no restrictions on employment sector or hours. Travel in and out of the UK is permitted, but accumulated absences must be monitored carefully to protect eligibility for ILR.
## Practical Tips for Zimbabwean Applicants
- Begin gathering evidence of the relationship early: photos across different periods, communication records, travel history showing visits, and any joint financial or administrative documents.
- The TB test certificate has a limited validity period — book it at the right time, not too early.
- Sponsors who are employed should obtain a letter from their employer on company headed paper confirming salary and employment status, alongside six months of payslips and bank statements.
- Given the complexity of the application and the financial stakes involved, many Zimbabwean families in the UK use an OISC-regulated immigration adviser or a solicitor, particularly where the sponsor's income is close to the threshold or derives from self-employment.
