UK Spouse and Family Visa for Zimbabwean Partners: Requirements, Costs and the Application Process

Last updated 31 July 2026

General information only, not immigration or legal advice. Rules and requirements change; check the relevant official source before acting.
For the large Zimbabwean community settled across the UK, bringing a spouse or partner from Zimbabwe is one of the most significant and complex immigration processes they will face. The rules have changed substantially since April 2024, and getting the application right matters enormously — refusals are costly, time-consuming, and emotionally draining. ## Who Can Sponsor a Zimbabwean Spouse or Partner? The UK-based sponsor must be a British citizen, or hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), settled status, refugee status, or humanitarian protection. Both partners must be 18 or older. The couple must demonstrate that their relationship is genuine and subsisting, that they have met in person (video calls do not count), and that they intend to live together permanently in the UK. Applications are assessed under Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules. ## The Financial Requirement: What Changed in April 2024 This is the area where most applications fall down, and the rules shifted significantly from 11 April 2024. New applicants must now show a minimum gross annual income of **£29,000**. This replaces the previous threshold of £18,600 that had been in place for years. If relying entirely on cash savings rather than income, the savings threshold is **£88,500**, held in a regulated account for at least six months before the application date. A declaration of the source of those savings is required. Income and savings can be combined in certain circumstances if neither alone meets the threshold. Importantly, the previous requirement to add extra amounts for dependent children has been removed for applications made under the new rules. This is good news for families — one income figure now covers the whole household. **Transitional arrangements** exist for those already on the spouse visa pathway. If you were granted a spouse or fiancé visa before 11 April 2024, you may still renew under the old £18,600 threshold, plus £3,800 for the first dependent child and £2,800 for each additional child. If those additions would push the total above £29,000, the new single threshold applies instead. The government had signalled further rises — to £34,500 and then £38,700 — so it is worth checking current GOV.UK guidance before submitting an application, as figures may have moved. The sponsor's income is what counts for most applications. The Zimbabwean applicant's own income can only be included if they are already living and working lawfully in the UK at the time of application. ## English Language Requirement Zimbabwean applicants are not automatically exempt from the English language requirement simply because Zimbabwe is an English-speaking country. The requirement must be formally demonstrated through an approved test — typically the IELTS Life Skills A1 test taken at a UKVI-recognised centre. The certificate must be valid when the application is submitted. Expired certificates cause delays and refusals. Exemptions apply to applicants aged 65 or over, those with certain long-term physical or mental conditions, and those who hold a degree that was taught in English. Nationals of majority English-speaking countries are also exempt — however, Zimbabwe is not currently on that list, so most Zimbabwean applicants will need to take the test unless another exemption applies. ## TB Test Applicants applying from Zimbabwe must obtain a tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic before submitting their application. This is a standard requirement for visa applications from Zimbabwe and cannot be bypassed. ## Key Documents A well-organised document bundle is essential. Common reasons for refusal include missing documents, poor formatting, or insufficient relationship evidence. The bundle typically includes: - Valid Zimbabwean passport (with at least one blank page) - Proof of the sponsor's British citizenship or settled status - Marriage certificate (certified copy) - Evidence of the genuine and subsisting relationship: photographs together, communication records, travel history, evidence of joint life - Financial documents: payslips, employer letters, bank statements (usually six months), P60 - Accommodation evidence: tenancy agreement, mortgage statement, or written consent from a landlord or homeowner confirming the couple can live there without overcrowding - English language test certificate - TB test certificate - Any previous immigration history documents ## Where to Apply and Processing Times The application is submitted online via GOV.UK. After that, biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph) must be provided in person at the UK visa application centre in Harare. Spouse visa processing times from Zimbabwe typically range from **8 to 24 weeks**. Priority processing may be available for an additional fee. Plan well in advance — the process is not fast. ## Visa Duration and the Path to Settlement A spouse visa granted from outside the UK is valid for **2 years and 9 months**. It can then be extended for a further 2 years and 6 months. After a total of 5 years on the spouse visa route, the holder can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, provided the financial requirement is still met at that point. Once ILR is granted, a spouse of a British citizen can immediately apply for British citizenship. If the sponsor holds settled status rather than British citizenship, the applicant must wait 12 months after ILR before applying to naturalise. ## Practical Advice for UK-Based Zimbabwean Sponsors The £29,000 income threshold catches many people off guard, particularly those in part-time work, self-employment, or lower-paid roles. If your income falls short, check whether savings can supplement it. Self-employed sponsors face additional scrutiny and will need to provide full accounts and tax returns. Accommodation must be suitable and not overcrowded. If you are renting, your tenancy agreement must cover the period after your partner arrives, or you will need a letter from the landlord confirming this. Living with family is acceptable but requires written consent from the homeowner. Given the cost of a refusal — application fees are not refunded — many families choose to use an immigration solicitor or barrister, particularly where there are complications around income, employment type, or prior immigration issues. Fees vary, but the investment can prevent a costly refusal. For current fees and the most up-to-date financial thresholds, always check GOV.UK directly before submitting, as figures in this area have been subject to change.
