UK Visa Routes for Zimbabweans: Skilled Worker, Family, and Student Visas Explained

Every Zimbabwean national requires a visa to enter the United Kingdom, regardless of the purpose of travel. Zimbabwe is not eligible for the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), meaning a full visa application is required in every case. Applications are submitted through the UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Harare, where biometric information — fingerprints and a photograph — must also be provided. Appointments should be booked well in advance, as slots fill quickly during peak periods. Standard processing takes approximately 15 working days, though a Priority Service is available for approximately £100, reducing the wait to around 5 working days. A Super Priority option can deliver a decision within one working day, though availability and costs should be confirmed on the UKVI website at the time of application. ## Skilled Worker Visa The Skilled Worker Visa is the main route for Zimbabweans who have secured a job offer from a UK employer holding a valid sponsor licence. The job must appear on the eligible occupations list and meet the required skill level. The general salary threshold stands at £38,700 per year, or the going rate for the specific occupation — whichever is higher. However, certain applicants may qualify at a lower salary if they can accumulate additional points. Discounts apply for roles on the Immigration Salary List (previously the Shortage Occupation List), for new entrants to the labour market, and for positions in healthcare or education. Applicants with a PhD relevant to the role, or a STEM PhD, also benefit from a lower threshold. Visa fees range from £827 to £1,423 depending on the length of stay and whether the application is made inside or outside the UK. Applicants must also pay an Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year, and must demonstrate that they hold at least £1,270 in their bank account for 28 consecutive days before applying — unless they have been in the UK on a valid visa for the past 12 months, or their employer agrees to cover initial costs. After five continuous years on the Skilled Worker route, applicants can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), provided they have not spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period during that time. ## Family Visa The Family Visa allows Zimbabweans to join or remain with a close family member who is settled in the UK or is a British citizen. The most common application is for a spouse or partner, though routes exist for children, parents, and other dependants. For a spouse or partner visa, the UK-based sponsor must typically earn at least £29,000 per year — a threshold that increased significantly in 2024 and is set to rise further. The financial requirement is designed to ensure the family can be supported without recourse to public funds. Applicants must also demonstrate that their relationship is genuine and subsisting, provide evidence of adequate accommodation, and meet an English language requirement. Initial leave is usually granted for 30 months, extendable by a further 30 months, before ILR can be applied for after five years. For those already in the UK extending family-based leave, the relevant application is Further Leave to Remain (FLR(M)), which covers spouses, civil partners, and dependent children of UK residents. ## Student Visa Zimbabweans wishing to study full-time at a recognised UK educational institution apply for the Student Visa (formerly Tier 4). The institution must hold a Student Sponsor licence, and applicants need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number from the school or university. Applicants must demonstrate they can cover tuition fees and living costs. For study in London, the minimum maintenance requirement is £1,334 per month for up to nine months; outside London, this drops to £1,023 per month. These funds must have been held in the applicant's account for at least 28 consecutive days before the application. The Student Visa also permits part-time work during term time — generally up to 20 hours per week — and full-time work during official vacations. After graduation, eligible students can switch to the Graduate Visa, which allows two years of work in the UK without requiring a job offer. ## UK Ancestry Visa Although Zimbabwe left the Commonwealth in 2003, the Home Office continues to treat Zimbabwean nationals as Commonwealth citizens for the purposes of the UK Ancestry Visa. Zimbabweans who have a grandparent born in the UK may apply for this route, which grants five years' leave to work in the UK. After five years of continuous residence — with no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period — holders can apply for ILR. ## Settlement and ILR Most routes to ILR require five years of continuous residence on a qualifying visa. However, significant rule changes have been introduced that affect care workers and others: those on health and care visas now face a 10 to 15-year qualifying period under new proposals.
