UK Visa Routes for Zimbabweans: Skilled Worker, Family, Student and Visitor Visas Explained

Every Zimbabwean passport holder requires a visa to enter the United Kingdom, regardless of the purpose of travel. As of 2025, Zimbabwe is not eligible for the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, meaning a full visa application is mandatory before departure. Applications are submitted online and processed through the UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Harare, where applicants also provide biometric information — fingerprints and a photograph. ## Standard Visitor Visa The Standard Visitor Visa is the most commonly used route for Zimbabweans travelling to the UK for tourism, family visits, business meetings, or short-term study of up to six months. It does not permit the holder to work or access public funds. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate strong ties to Zimbabwe — employment, property, family dependants — and show they intend to return after their visit. Financial evidence is critical. While there is no officially fixed minimum, a widely cited benchmark is approximately £1,000 per month of intended stay available in your bank account, with statements covering at least three months. A cover letter clearly explaining the purpose of the visit and your ties to Zimbabwe significantly strengthens an application. The standard processing time is two to four weeks from submission. A Priority Service reduces this to approximately five working days, and a Super Priority Service can deliver a decision within one working day, both at additional cost. Visitor visas are typically granted for up to six months per visit, though the visa itself may be issued as a multiple-entry document valid for two, five, or ten years. ## Skilled Worker Visa The Skilled Worker Visa replaced the old Tier 2 (General) work visa at the end of 2020. It allows Zimbabwean nationals to live and work in the UK for a licensed employer sponsor, initially for up to five years, with a route to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five years of qualifying residence. Key eligibility requirements include: - A confirmed job offer from a UK employer holding a valid sponsor licence - A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by that employer - A minimum salary of £38,700 per year (as of April 2024), or the going rate for the specific job — whichever is higher - English language proficiency at CEFR Level B1 or above - At least £1,270 held in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before applying Certain roles attract lower salary thresholds — including positions on the Shortage Occupation List, roles in health and education, and applicants with a relevant PhD or STEM qualification. Visa fees range from £827 to £1,423 depending on circumstances, plus an annual Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year. Employers often cover these costs, but this should be confirmed before accepting any offer. ## Student Visa Zimbabwean nationals wishing to study full-time at a UK institution must apply for a Student Visa (formerly Tier 4). To qualify, applicants need an unconditional offer from a UK institution licensed by the Home Office as a Student sponsor, demonstrated English language ability, and proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living costs. The amount required depends on the course location — London-based study requires evidence of higher living costs than elsewhere in the UK. Student visas generally permit part-time work of up to 20 hours per week during term time. ## Family Visa Zimbabweans with a spouse, partner, parent, or child who is a British citizen or settled person in the UK can apply for a Family Visa. The most common route is joining a spouse or partner. The sponsoring UK resident must meet a minimum income threshold — currently £29,000 per year as of 2024, rising to £38,700 by early 2025 under phased changes — and the relationship must be genuine and subsisting. If granted, the Family Visa typically allows a 30-month stay, renewable, with ILR available after five years. ## UK Ancestry Visa Zimbabweans who have a grandparent born in the United Kingdom may qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa. This allows the holder to live and work in the UK without restriction for an initial five-year period, after which ILR becomes available. The applicant must be a Commonwealth citizen, aged 17 or over, and able to demonstrate the ability to support themselves financially. ## Applying from Zimbabwe All visa applications begin online at gov.uk.
