Reuniting with family in the UK is one of the most common immigration goals for Zimbabweans in the diaspora. Whether sponsoring a spouse from Harare, bringing elderly parents for a visit, or supporting a child's move, the UK's family visa system places most of the legal and financial burden on the person already in Britain. Understanding what is actually required — and where applications typically go wrong — makes an enormous difference to outcomes.
## Spouse and Partner Visas
The spouse visa (formally the UK Partner Visa) is the primary route for Zimbabweans joining a husband, wife, or long-term partner who is a British citizen or has settled status in the UK. As of April 2024, the financial requirement increased significantly. New applicants must now show that the UK-based sponsor earns at least £29,000 per year before tax. This is a sharp rise from the previous £18,600 threshold that applied for many years.
Importantly, there are transitional protections. If you were already on the five-year spouse visa pathway and your original visa was granted before 11 April 2024, the lower £18,600 threshold continues to apply when renewing or extending. This matters for thousands of Zimbabwean couples currently mid-way through the settlement process.
If children are included in the application, the income requirements increase further:
- No children: £29,000
- One dependent child: £32,800
- Two dependent children: £35,200
- Three dependent children: £37,600
Note that for applications made after 11 April 2024, additional child income requirements were removed for new applicants — the £29,000 base figure covers dependants. The per-child additions above apply primarily under transitional rules.
Where salary alone does not meet the threshold, savings can substitute or supplement income. If the sponsor has no qualifying income at all, savings of at least £88,500 (previously £62,500) must have been held in a bank account for a minimum of six months. Combined income and savings approaches are also permitted in certain circumstances.
The applicant's own overseas income in Zimbabwe generally cannot be counted toward the financial requirement unless they are already living and working lawfully in the UK.
Beyond finances, all spouse visa applicants must:
- Be 18 or over (as must the sponsor)
- Demonstrate a genuine and subsisting relationship
- Meet the English language requirement
- Have adequate accommodation in the UK
Even where a marriage is officially registered in Zimbabwe, UKVI will still scrutinise the relationship's authenticity. Evidence of ongoing communication, visits, shared finances, photographs together over time, and knowledge of each other's lives all contribute to a convincing application.
A successful spouse visa leads to two and a half years of leave, renewable for a further two and a half years. After five continuous years, Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) can be applied for, and British citizenship follows after a further twelve months.
## Visitor Visas for Parents
Bringing parents from Zimbabwe to visit is common within the diaspora, but visitor visa applications for older relatives face particular scrutiny. UKVI assesses whether the applicant has sufficient ties to Zimbabwe to guarantee their return — financial ties (property, pension, savings), family ties (a spouse or dependent children remaining behind), and employment where applicable.
Parents who are retired, widowed, or have sold their property are statistically more likely to be refused, as officers may conclude there is insufficient incentive to return. This does not mean refusal is inevitable, but the application must address these concerns head-on.
A visitor visa allows a stay of up to six months. The UK-based child sponsoring the visit should provide:
- A signed sponsor letter confirming accommodation and financial support
- Their own bank statements and payslips
- Evidence of the relationship (birth certificate, family photographs)
The visiting parent must also demonstrate their own financial situation and intent to leave the UK at the end of the visit.
Visitor visa fees from Zimbabwe currently stand at £135 for a standard six-month visa. Long-validity options (two, five, or ten years) are available and cost more but offer far better value for families who plan regular visits.
When a visitor visa is refused, the refusal letter will state reasons. An administrative review is possible if the decision involved a caseworking error. In cases involving compassionate circumstances — such as bereavement or a medical emergency — providing new evidence in a fresh application or requesting reconsideration may be appropriate.
## Common Refusal Reasons
Refusals across family visa categories tend to cluster around a small number of recurring issues:
**Failure to meet the financial threshold.** Sponsors who are self-employed, on variable hours, or recently changed jobs often struggle to evidence the required income. Payslips and bank statements must consistently reflect the claimed salary.
**Insufficient evidence of genuine relationship.** UKVI may not be satisfied that a marriage or partnership is genuine. Sparse communication records, short courtship periods, or significant age gaps can prompt additional scrutiny. Couples who have never lived together face a higher burden of proof.
**Weak ties to home country.** For visitor visa applicants especially, a lack of property ownership, stable employment, or dependent family in Zimbabwe raises concerns about overstaying.
**Incomplete or inconsistent documentation.** Missing pages from bank statements, discrepancies between documents, or unsigned sponsor letters all provide grounds for refusal.
**Incorrect visa category.** Applying under the wrong route — for example, using a visitor visa when a family visa is the appropriate route — results in refusal regardless of the quality of other evidence.
## Practical Advice
Gather bank statements covering at least six months, not just the most recent one or two. For spouse visas, include evidence of the relationship's history from its earliest stages. Sponsors who are self-employed should work with an accountant to produce clear, up-to-date accounts and tax returns.
All Zimbabwean applicants for visas longer than six months are required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, currently £1,035 per year per adult. This is paid online before the biometrics appointment is booked.
Zimbabwe does not benefit from any visa-waiver arrangement with the UK, so every visa category requires a full application through UKVI at gov.uk. Biometrics are submitted at a designated visa application centre. Processing for spouse and family visas typically takes longer than the standard visitor visa timeline of around fifteen working days — applicants should not book travel until a decision is received.
For complex cases — particularly where the sponsor cannot meet the income threshold, where there has been a previous refusal, or where Article 8 human rights grounds may be relevant — consulting a regulated UK immigration solicitor or adviser is strongly recommended before submitting.
