What is Universal Credit and how does it work?

Universal Credit is the UK main benefits payment for people on low income or out of work. It replaces several older benefits including Jobseeker Allowance, Housing Benefit, and Tax Credits. You apply online at gov.uk/universal-credit. Eligibility depends on your immigration status, income, savings (under £16,000), and circumstances. You must have the right to reside and the right to work in the UK. The amount you receive depends on your circumstances — whether you are single, in a couple, have children, have a disability, or pay rent. Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears, which can be challenging — budget carefully as there is usually a 5-week wait for the first payment (you can request an advance). You may be required to attend Jobcentre appointments and demonstrate you are looking for work. Some Zimbabweans with certain visa types may not be eligible — check your immigration status conditions.
