What should Zimbabweans know about UK employment rights?

General information only, not legal advice. Rules and requirements change; check the relevant official source before acting.
All workers in the UK, regardless of nationality, have legal employment rights. You are entitled to: National Minimum Wage (rate depends on age, currently over 11 pounds per hour for 21+), 5.6 weeks paid annual leave (including bank holidays), a written statement of employment terms, payslips showing deductions, statutory sick pay, rest breaks (20 minutes if working 6+ hours, 11 hours between shifts), protection from unfair dismissal (after 2 years service), protection from discrimination based on race, nationality, religion, sex, disability, age, or sexual orientation, and the right to join a trade union. Your employer cannot withhold your passport, pay below minimum wage, or force excessive hours. If on a sponsored visa, your employer has additional duties — if they breach these, report to UKVI. If you face workplace issues: ACAS provides free advice (0300 123 1100), Citizens Advice helps with employment disputes, and employment tribunals handle formal claims. Keep copies of payslips, contracts, and correspondence. Knowing your rights protects you from exploitation.
