Your Zimbabwe Pension and NSSA Contributions After Moving to the UK: What You Can Claim, Transfer or Lose
Last updated 22 August 2026
General information only, not financial or tax advice. Rules and requirements change; check the relevant official source before acting.
Leaving Zimbabwe for the UK does not automatically cancel your entitlement to benefits accumulated through the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), but claiming them from abroad requires deliberate action, patience with bureaucracy, and an understanding of what the system actually offers. Many Zimbabweans in the UK are sitting on unclaimed benefits — or have simply written them off without knowing they had options.
**What NSSA Covers**
NSSA operates two main schemes: the Pension and Other Benefits Scheme (POBS) and the Accident Prevention and Workers' Compensation Scheme. For most workers who emigrated, POBS is the relevant scheme. It provides:
- Retirement Benefit (as a pension or lump-sum grant, depending on contribution history)
- Invalidity Benefit
- Survivor's Benefit
- Funeral Grant
To qualify for a retirement pension rather than a one-off grant, you generally need a sufficient number of contribution months. Workers with fewer contributions typically receive a lump-sum retirement grant instead of ongoing monthly payments.
**Can You Still Claim from the UK?**
Yes — but the process is entirely paper-based and requires physical presence in Zimbabwe or a trusted representative on the ground. NSSA launched an online claims portal (accessible via nssa.org.zw), though as of late 2024, multiple users reported technical difficulties accessing it.
The standard route requires completing form P9/P10, which must be completed by both the contributor and, where applicable, a former employer. Supporting documents include:
- Certified copy of your national identity card
- A valid Zimbabwean passport or driver's licence
- A recent bank statement
- A payslip stamped and signed by your last Zimbabwean employer
These must be submitted to your nearest NSSA office in Zimbabwe — meaning most UK-based claimants rely on a family member, friend, or appointed agent to hand-deliver on their behalf. NSSA does not have overseas offices.
For queries, NSSA's contact centre email is contactcentre@nssa.org.zw. They are also active on social media as @nssazw.
**Permanent Disability Benefits Are Payable Abroad**
One significant provision confirmed by the US Social Security Administration's comparative review of Zimbabwe's system: NSSA permanent disability benefits are payable abroad. If you left Zimbabwe with an assessed permanent disability of more than 30% from a workplace injury or illness, you can receive that pension regardless of where you live — including the UK.
**The Diaspora Pension Problem**
A 2015 report estimated that Zimbabwean pensioners living abroad were collectively owed approximately $10 million in unpaid or stalled benefits. Bureaucratic requirements — including the demand for certified documentation from both former employers and multiple government agencies — have made claiming extremely difficult, particularly when former employers have closed, relocated, or simply cannot be traced.
For workers who left Zimbabwe during the economic collapse of the 2000s, payslips and employer records are often lost entirely. Without a stamped employer payslip, NSSA claims frequently stall.
**Zimbabwe's National Diaspora Policy**
Zimbabwe's National Diaspora Policy, developed through the Ministry responsible for diaspora affairs, explicitly commits to establishing mechanisms for the transfer and repatriation of terminal, pension, and social security benefits for returned diaspora members. It also aims to conclude bilateral labour agreements with host countries — including potentially the UK — to formalise these protections. As of the time of writing, no such bilateral agreement between Zimbabwe and the UK specifically covering NSSA benefit portability has been concluded.
**Private Occupational Pensions**
If you contributed to an employer occupational pension scheme in Zimbabwe (separate from NSSA), your entitlement depends entirely on the rules of that specific scheme and whether it is still solvent. Many defined-benefit schemes in Zimbabwe were severely eroded by hyperinflation in the 2000s. Contact the relevant employer's HR or pension administrator directly. Some schemes, particularly in the mining and financial sectors, remain active.
**Your UK State Pension Is Not Affected**
If you are now working and paying National Insurance in the UK, you are building entitlement to the UK State Pension independently of anything in Zimbabwe. You can claim your UK State Pension even if you subsequently retire to Zimbabwe — payments continue to a Zimbabwean bank account. However, UK State Pension payments to Zimbabwe are not uprated annually the way they are for residents in some other countries, meaning the real value erodes over time. Contact the International Pension Centre for details.
Note that many income-related UK benefits such as Pension Credit and Housing Benefit cannot be paid if you are outside the UK for more than four weeks.
**Practical Steps for UK-Based Claimants**
1. Establish your NSSA contribution record by contacting contactcentre@nssa.org.zw with your NRZ (National Registration) number and employment history.
2. Identify a trusted person in Zimbabwe who can submit paperwork on your behalf.
3. Gather certified copies of your ID, passport, and any employment records. UK-based Zimbabweans can have documents certified by a solicitor or notary in the UK.
4. If you worked for a company that still exists, contact their HR department for payslip records or a contribution confirmation letter.
5. If your former employer no longer exists, contact NSSA directly — they hold historical contribution records and may be able to process claims with alternative evidence.
The process is slow and often frustrating, but the entitlement does not expire simply because you left Zimbabwe.
