Zimbabwe Customs Duties — What You Pay on Goods Sent from UK

Last updated 8 March 2026

Goods sent to Zimbabwe are subject to customs duties and taxes administered by ZIMRA (Zimbabwe Revenue Authority). Key rules: DUTY-FREE ALLOWANCE: Returning residents and those sending personal effects may qualify for duty-free treatment on used personal and household goods, subject to conditions (items must be genuinely used, not for resale). DUTY RATES: New goods and items deemed commercial attract duty at varying rates — typically 25-60% of the assessed value, plus 15% VAT on top. Electronics, clothing, and vehicles have specific duty categories. COMMON ITEMS AND APPROXIMATE DUTY: Clothing (used) — often passed as personal effects if reasonable quantity. Electronics (new) — 25-40% duty plus VAT. Televisions — high duty rate. Vehicles — very high duties (60-100%+ depending on age and engine size). Food items — varies, some restricted. TIPS TO MINIMISE DUTY: (1) Send used items rather than brand new (with tags removed); (2) Don't over-pack — excessively large shipments attract scrutiny; (3) Declare contents accurately — under-declaration can lead to seizure; (4) The recipient in Zimbabwe handles customs clearance (your shipping company may assist); (5) Keep receipts or be prepared for ZIMRA to assign their own values. PROHIBITED ITEMS: Drugs, weapons, pornography, counterfeit goods, certain agricultural products. ZIMRA enforcement is variable — sometimes strict, sometimes lenient — but goods can be held for weeks if there are disputes.
