Travelling to Zimbabwe from the UK involves different entry requirements depending on which passport you hold. For the Zimbabwean diaspora in the UK — many of whom hold either a Zimbabwean passport, a British passport, or both — understanding these distinctions is essential before booking any trip. ## British Citizens (British Passport Only) British passport holders require a visa to enter Zimbabwe. However, the process is relatively straightforward. The most common option is the visa on arrival, typically granted for 30 days, which can be obtained at major ports of entry including Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls airports, as well as at land border posts. Fees for British passport holders are as follows: - Single entry (30 days): USD $55 - Double entry: USD $75 - KAZA Univisa (Zimbabwe and Zambia, with day trips into Botswana): USD $50 — available at Victoria Falls and Kazungula border posts Pay in US dollars cash, preferably small notes, as card payments are not reliably accepted at immigration counters. Alternatively, British citizens can apply for an e-visa before travelling through Zimbabwe's official immigration portal. Single entry e-visas are available for tourism purposes, and applications should be submitted at least 10 business days before departure. Once approved, the e-visa is sent by email. As of the research date, it is no longer possible to obtain a Zimbabwean visa from the Zimbabwean Embassy in London — all applications must go through the online system or be obtained on arrival. For passport validity, British travellers must hold a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, with a minimum of three blank pages. ## Zimbabwean Passport Holders If you are travelling on a Zimbabwean passport, Zimbabwe is your home country and no visa is required for entry. You are entering as a citizen. Standard entry is granted and your Zimbabwean passport is the relevant document for immigration purposes on arrival. However, there are several practical considerations. Your Zimbabwean passport must be valid and must not have been reported lost or stolen. Zimbabwean authorities will deny entry if you attempt to use a compromised document. Ensure your passport has sufficient validity for your intended stay, and check the expiry date well in advance of booking flights. If your Zimbabwean passport is expired or about to expire, the Zimbabwe Embassy in London (at 429 Strand, London WC2R 0JR) handles passport renewals and related consular services. Renewing a Zimbabwean passport from the UK involves submitting an application, supporting documents, and fees directly to the embassy. ## Dual Nationals: Holding Both Passports Many in the UK Zimbabwean community hold both a Zimbabwean and a British passport. The key rule here is straightforward: when travelling to Zimbabwe, you should use your Zimbabwean passport as the primary document for entry, as you are entering as a citizen. When returning to the UK, British law requires you to re-enter on your valid British passport or hold a certificate of entitlement if you are a British citizen. Dual nationals should carry both passports when travelling. Use your Zimbabwean passport at Zimbabwean immigration and your British passport at UK border control on return. Attempting to enter Zimbabwe on a British passport when you also hold Zimbabwean citizenship is generally not recommended, as Zimbabwe does not formally recognise dual nationality in all circumstances, and complications can arise. ## Transiting via South Africa Many flights between the UK and Zimbabwe connect through Johannesburg. South Africa requires at least two clean, consecutive blank pages per transit, enforced strictly at the border. For a return journey transiting South Africa in both directions and entering Zimbabwe, you may need as many as six blank pages in total across both passports. South African border officials will refuse boarding or entry if this requirement is not met. ## Online Immigration Declaration As of April 2025, Zimbabwe Immigration introduced a streamlined online visa application and immigration declaration form system, which has improved processing times — particularly at Victoria Falls Airport. Travellers are encouraged to complete this form before arrival regardless of visa category. ## Extending Your Stay Visa extensions for those who entered on a tourist visa (30 or 45 days) require an in-person visit to the Zimbabwe Immigration Department. This cannot be done at the airport or online. If you plan to volunteer, do missionary work, study, or conduct business beyond a standard tourist visit, you must arrange the appropriate permit in advance of travel.
