For the estimated 112,000-plus Zimbabweans living in the UK, managing passport documentation from abroad requires navigating a process that spans two countries. Zimbabwe passports are only issued within Zimbabwe itself, meaning UK-based Zimbabweans must complete initial paperwork at the London embassy before having a representative in Zimbabwe finalise the application on their behalf. ## The Zimbabwe Embassy in London The Embassy of Zimbabwe — officially Zimbabwe House — is located at 429 Strand, London WC2R 0JR. It sits in central London near Trafalgar Square, with the nearest Underground stations being Charing Cross, Embankment, and Covent Garden. Note that the address falls within London's Congestion Charge zone, so driving is not advisable. Contact details: - **Phone:** +44 (0)20 7836 7755 - **Email:** zimlondon@zimfa.gov.zw or zimebassy@zimlondon.gov.zw - **Website:** www.zimlondon.gov.zw All visits require an appointment — walk-ins are not accepted for passport services. The embassy is closed on both UK and Zimbabwean public holidays. The current Ambassador is Colonel (Rtd.) Christian Katsande. ## Passport Renewal from the UK The renewal process involves two stages: completing initial steps at the London embassy, then having a representative submit your documents at a passport office in Zimbabwe. ### Documents Required Before attending your embassy appointment, gather the following: - Long original birth certificate and photocopy - Original Zimbabwean national ID (paper or card, for adults over 16) and photocopy — IDs must reflect the name the passport will be issued in; name changes can only be processed in Zimbabwe - Expired or current Zimbabwe passport and photocopies of the biodata page and any page showing your right to reside in the UK - If you hold a second passport from another country, include that document and a photocopy of its biodata page - Passport-size photographs — Zimbabwean passport photos are 3.5cm x 4.5cm, which differs from the UK standard size, so specify this when getting photos taken The embassy does not accept downloaded forms. Forms P1 and P34 must be obtained directly from the embassy to prevent fraud. ### Fees | Service | Fee | Notes | |---|---|---| | Embassy Consular Fee | £45 | Required for all applications | | Standard Passport (38 pages) | US$120 equivalent | Payable in Zimbabwe by your representative | | Express Passport Service | US$270 equivalent | Faster processing, 2–4 weeks | | Temporary Travel Document | £115 | One-way emergency use | Payment at the embassy is accepted by cashier's cheque or money order payable to "Embassy of Zimbabwe". Cash, personal cheques, and credit or debit cards are not accepted. ### Processing Times Standard passport renewal takes 3 to 6 months. Express processing takes 2 to 4 weeks but costs significantly more. Plan well ahead — do not let your passport expire before beginning the process, particularly if you have upcoming travel or visa applications. ### Your Zimbabwe Representative A key change introduced in 2025 is that your representative in Zimbabwe must be a family member sharing your surname, or you must be able to demonstrate your relationship — for example, by providing both of your birth certificates. You cannot simply appoint a friend or agent. Your representative will submit the completed application and collect the new passport on your behalf. Budget approximately £40 each way for courier fees to send documents to Zimbabwe and return the new passport to the UK. ## Emergency Travel Documents (ETD) An Emergency Travel Document is a single-journey travel document issued to Zimbabwean citizens who need to travel urgently without a valid passport. It is not the same as a full passport. ### Key Facts - **Cost:** Approximately $50 (USD) / £115 at the London embassy - **Processing time:** 1 to 2 business days - **Validity:** 30 days - **Use:** Single journey only Applicants must attend an in-person interview at Zimbabwe House. Supporting documentation can include copies of previous passports, a driving licence, birth certificate, or other identity evidence. The ETD is primarily accepted for travel back to Zimbabwe and for transit through neighbouring SADC countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Mozambique. Before booking flights, always confirm with the airline and the destination country's immigration authority that an ETD will be accepted — some airlines and countries may not recognise it. If time permits, an emergency passport (US$318, approximately 7 working days, valid for 10 years as a full passport) is generally a better option than an ETD, as it provides far greater travel flexibility. ### ETD in Removal or Deportation Contexts For individuals facing removal from the UK, the Home Office's Returns Logistics team will submit an ETD application directly to Zimbabwe House on the applicant's behalf, along with a submission letter, bio-data form, four passport-standard photographs, and any available supporting evidence. The embassy then conducts a nationality interview, after which an ETD Agreement is issued if identity is confirmed. Children born in the UK require their full UK birth certificate as part of this process. ## Lost Passport If your passport is lost or stolen in the UK, report the loss to the local police first and obtain a crime reference number. Then contact the Zimbabwe Embassy to begin a replacement application. Bring any remaining identity documents — national ID, birth certificate, driving licence — along with the police report. ## Practical Tips - Book your embassy appointment as early as possible; slots can fill up weeks in advance - Do not use downloaded forms — they will not be accepted - Allow 3 to 6 months for standard renewal; do not wait until your passport is about to expire - If your surname differs from your representative's in Zimbabwe due to marriage, prepare documentary evidence of the relationship before beginning the process - Keep photocopies of all documents submitted, and track courier deliveries at both ends
