Africa's digital economy hampered by low domain ownership and payment barriers

Despite rapid growth in Africa's digital economy, domain ownership remains extremely low compared to global markets, with many entrepreneurs unable to purchase domains due to international payment restrictions and foreign currency requirements. Agentic AI company Gebeya has announced a strategic partnership with InterNetX, a European domain registrar and part of the IONOS Group, to enable direct domain registration for African businesses. The partnership aims to remove payment barriers that have historically excluded African entrepreneurs from the global web.
